Martin Ginocchio

by Judy Duncan

March 1, 2006 - If you have been perusing the TRS web site links to the old MileMarker newsletters, you most assuredly have come across the profile on Martin Ginocchio (issue #4).  Twenty-two years later we would like to re-introduce you to Marty, better known as the Grand Poobah of the Todds Road Stumblers. a title he has earned over the 22 years of running with the Stumblers.  At 74 years young, he is usually the oldest Stumbler running on Saturday mornings.

As the MileMarker article mentions, Marty did not start running until he was 47 years old.  He was looking for a way to improve his health and his wife, Sue, purchased him the first pair of running shoes.  His maiden 2 mile run did not occur until approximately six months after that purchase.  Twenty-seven years and 54+ pairs of shoes later, he's still running and has never regretted Sue's advice.  Once Marty joined the Todds Road Stumblers, Sue, often referred to Marty's Saturday morning runs as his "big social event of the week".  Marty and Sue were married over 50 years when Sue passed away in January 2005.

In real life, Marty is an architect for the Historic Preservation Division of the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government.  He issues certificates of appropriateness to building owners seeking to make improvements to buildings within the 14 historic districts in Lexington. The MileMarker article highlights his career and speaks of his four children.  Needless to say, his children have grown up.  Three of Marty's children, John, Mark, and Michelle, chose to follow in their father's footsteps and became architects.

Mary, Marty's youngest daughter and the only non-architect, owns and manages Mulberry & Lime, which sits on the corner of N. Limestone and Constitution in Lexington, KY.  Incidentally, Marty hosts the annual Stumblers' Reunion every Fourth of July, directly following the Bluegrass 10,000 at Mulberry & Lime which is just 3 blocks from the finish line.  Marty invites all past and present Todds Road Stumblers to find their way to Mulberry & Lime on July 4th 2006.

The earlier article in the MileMarker stated that none of Marty's children were runners and alluded that they, too, might start running later in life.  Dan Seavers, the author of the 1984 article, must be psychic, because there are now 3 Ginocchio children on the board at the TRS Club House.  The most recent member, Mary, joined us February 18th for a nice 6 mile run along Basin Springs.  Marty's pride was evident as he introduced Mary to other Stumblers.

Life for Marty is not just running and working, he also enjoys collecting antique fishing reels, lures, and minnow buckets and nightly walks with his collie, Cooper.   Another point of interest, and probably a little known fact, is that Marty is a trained weatherman!  He went to meteorology school and was a weatherman in the Air Force.  So, the next time you run with the Stumblers, be sure to say hello to Marty and ask him about the weather!

Welcome New Stumbler Rhonda Uber!

Feb. 11, 2006 -  Rhonda has been out to Todds Road for the past two Saturdays.  The first Saturday she came out it was 40 deg. and raining, a nasty running day by most people's standards, but Rhonda must like inclement weather because she braved snowy roads to join us again this past Saturday.  Or maybe it's just that bad weather follows her....hmmm.

Rhonda and her husband, Greg, live in Richmond and have three children, Parker (7), Pierce (5), and Ellie (2).  Rhonda is the Associate Director of Housing at EKU.  Besides running, her other interests include gardening, cooking and chasing after her children.  Rhonda has been running for about 8 years and describes her pace as "slow but steady".  Rhonda's not sure what her race PRs are but remembers finishing them all without stopping.

She's originally from Utah, but lived in Florida and South Carolina before moving to Richmond about four years ago.  This year one of her goals is to run the Derby Marathon.

Her most memorable run was the Race for the Cure in Palm Beach, Florida in 2000 where she ran in support of a friend with cancer.  She learned about the Stumblers through an online running discussion group and was invited to join us by Ernie Peel.  If you haven't already met Rhonda please take time to do so, she's easy to pick out of the group, she's the one with the easy laugh and big smile.
